This year’s retreat was held in Chattanooga, Tennessee and I was invited to do an “inspiration story” presentation and also participate in a panel discussion about the Portland chapter’s sustainability initiative.

In addition to getting a chance to get to know other chapter board members, the retreat is a great place to learn about AIGA’s direction and new initiatives. Here’s what AIGA is working on:

  • Design for Social Change: designers are increasingly being brought into problem-solving sessions for their design thinking and facilitation skills. Example: Aspen Design Summit
  • Design ProBono: AIGA is encouraging designers to give back to their communities by donating 5% of their time to pro bono projects. AIGA provides listings of pro bono projects seeking designers on its website.
  • Living Principles: the inward-focused Center for Sustainable Design has been replaced with the outward-facing Living Principles and a new Living Principles website has launched. The new approach is to invite dialogue across businesses and industries instead of a focus strictly on designers.
  • Documentary about AIGA: Lynda.com created a documentary video about the history of AIGA and the benefits of membership.
  • AIGA Make/Think design conference videos are now online.

We all serve markets and professions and clients, but at the heart of everything is community. It’s where we live, it’s the people we live with, and at its heart, community is who we are. When we reach out to members of our community who need help, we’re helping ourselves as much as we’re helping them. And so many of the really talented people I’ve known and worked with over the years have so much to offer. Tonight I’ll be meeting with representatives from Bradley-Angle House, a Portland domestic violence shelter, and we’ll begin the process of helping them define and plan a project to promote their services. We also continue to support the Portland Farmers Market, for whom we designed a new logo (with the help of outstanding Portland illustrator Kim Malek) and a completely new website. So as I head out to my Community Outreach meeting, and Lisa heads out to yet another AIGA session, I encourage you all to give generously to your communities… and I commend all of you who already are out there.
