Making a Contribution to Community

As I get ready to go to my first AMA-Oregon Community Outreach Program meeting, I thought I’d write a quick post about the importance of giving time and skill to our communities. We all serve markets and professions and clients, but at the heart of everything is community. It’s where we live, it’s the people we live with, and at its heart, community is who we are. When we reach out to members of our community who need help, we’re helping ourselves as much as we’re helping them. And so many of the really talented people I’ve known and worked with over the years have so much to offer. Tonight I’ll be meeting with representatives from Bradley-Angle House, a Portland domestic violence shelter, and we’ll begin the process of helping them define and plan a project to promote their services. We also continue to support the Portland Farmers Market, for whom we designed a new logo (with the help of outstanding Portland illustrator Kim Malek) and a completely new website. So as I head out to my Community Outreach meeting, and Lisa heads out to yet another AIGA session, I encourage you all to give generously to your communities… and I commend all of you who already are out there. Peace.
